Awesome Gem: Breeders Cup Predictions and Odds

Written by Mick Bergen

Awesome Gem is a longshot in the 2009 Breeders Cup Classic.

The longest odds of any horse on Saturday for the Breeders Cup Classic belong to Awesome Gem who is 30-1. Trainer Craig Dollase will try and spring a huge upset in Breeders Cup predictions with Awesome Gem being the largest longshot in betting odds with Jockey David Flores on board. In his last start, Awesome Gem won the Hawthorne Gold Cup. The six year old gelding may be best remembered for losing two years ago in the Classic to Curlin and Hard Spun. The main problem for backing Awesome Gem in Breeders Cup odds is his record on synthetic tracks. He has just one victory in 16 starts on synthetic tracks.

Two years ago maybe Awesome Gem would have had a shot since two years ago he finished second in the San Diego Handicap, Pacific Classic and Goodwood. This time though in Breeders Cup predictions the horse doesn’t seem as strong but his trainer, Craig Dollase said the horse is ready. “I’ve got him in good form right now,” Dollase said. “Even his Pacific Classic [this year], where he ran seventh, he ran well that day; he just got in some trouble. He’s just one of those horses that doesn’t get his picture taken too often, but he’s usually there or thereabouts. If he could be there or thereabouts on Saturday, we’ll be very happy.” That doesn’t sound like a ringing endorsement though and it would be a huge shock to see this horse hit the board in 2009 Breeders Cup odds.

2009 Breeders Cup Odds: Regal Ransom

Regal Ransom is a longshot in the 2009 Breeders Cup Classic.

The horse that should go to the early lead on Saturday in the Breeders Cup Classic is Regal Ransom. Most people don’t believe the horse can carry that speed to the finish though as he is listed at 20-1 in 2009 Breeders Cup odds. The horse is trained by Saeed bin Suroor and will be ridden by Richard Migliore. The horse did win his last start in the Super Derby but finished eighth in his only previous start at Santa Anita. Migliore is optimistic that Regal Ransom can do well for Godolphin.

It's been a lot of fun for me to be here the last three weeks and be a part of it, to see how they've come together for these races,” Migliore said. “As a group I don't think they could be doing any better. It's been very educational for me to see the process, how they've got them peaking at the right time.” Regal Ransom won the $2 million UAE Derby before finishing eighth in the Kentucky Derby. The horse did win the Grade II Super Derby but this is a huge step up in class from that race heading into 2009 Breeders Cup odds as a 20-1 longshot.

Breeders Cup Betting Picks: Quality Road Odds

Written by John Bower

John Velazquez will ride Quality Road in the 2009 Breeders Cup Classic.

There are a total of 13 horses in Saturday’s Breeders Cup betting field and one that is going under the radar is Quality Road. Just six months ago it was Quality Road who was getting all of the attention but now the horse is almost forgotten in 2009 Breeders Cup picks. He is listed at +1200 for trainer Todd Pletcher and will be ridden by veteran Jockey John Velazquez. The Breeders Cup Classic is one of eight races on the card for Saturday with a post time of 6:45pm EST and can be seen on ESPN starting at 3:00pm EST.

In his last start, Quality Road was second in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. The question for Quality Road in Breeders Cup picks will be how he takes to the synthetic surface at Santa Anita. The questions for Quality Road have always been about his health. He was a superstar horse heading into the Kentucky Derby before having problems with his feet. “He is a fit horse,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. Bet Quality Road +1200 in 2009 Breeder Cup betting odds at online racebooks.
