The #14 Ohio State Buckeyes and #20 Michigan State Spartans are both coming off lethargic non-conference wins last week in which they failed to get the cash. The two teams will open Big Ten Conference play with a match-up from Spartan Stadium scheduled to kickoff at 3:30pm EST. Ohio State vs Michigan State odds in Vegas and at online sportsbooks have listed the Spartans as slight field-goal (-3) favorites at home against the Buckeyes while college football week 5 betting lines on the over/under total have been set at 43.5.
New coach Urban Meyer is quickly putting a positive stamp on the Ohio State program. Although Ohio State is ineligible to play for the Big Ten title game, they may be the best team in the conference with a mark of 4-0 straight up despite being a poor value on the board with a mark of just 1-3 against the spread. QB Braxton Miller has responded to Meyer’s offense and leads the Bucks in both rushing and passing. OSU beat Alabama Birmingham last week 29-15 but failed to cover as 35-point home chalks. Despite being underdogs in Ohio State vs Michigan State odds, the Buckeyes have recently gone 7-1 against the Spartans, 14-5-1 ATS when playing on the road but are a dismal 1-4 against the spread in their last five games. Michigan State is also just 1-3 ATS this season despite a 3-1 straight up record.
Coach Mark Dantonio’s Spartans were the preseason favorite to win the Big Ten but a loss to Notre Dame raised plenty of doubts. MSU is coming off a weak 23-7 home win over Eastern Michigan as 31.5-point chalks last week as the Spartans offense has been a big disappointment for point spread gamblers and also ranks a miserable 105th in the nation for scoring while the defense has carried the team and ranks 6th overall. Looking at the handicapping trends for week 5 betting lines have the Spartans favorites on Saturday having recently gone 4-1 overall and 17-1 overall when playing at home but are just 2-5-1 ATS when playing the Buckeyes. Michigan State scored a 10-7 win at Ohio State last year but the Buckeyes look to have the clear edge on offense here as the defenses look pretty even.
