Union Rags was a Kentucky Derby favorite that should be well rested for Saturday's "run for the carnations" and an arguably better betting value than morning line favorite I’ll Have Another, who was scratched on Friday with a tendon injury and retired from horse racing. With the announcement of I'll Have Another scratched, Union Rags is currently listed as a 11/5 favorite in Belmmont Stakes betting odds having a record of dominance, at least of course before the Kentucky Derby. Heading into the Run for the Roses, Union Rags had finished in the money for 6-consecutive races including 4 wins.
Union Rags was the winner of the grade 1 Champagne last October and was a 2nd place horse in the grade 1 Breeders Cup Juvenile, which is one of the most competitive and prestigious races on the calendar. Unfortunately on Derby Day, Union Rags lost much of that luster and credibility with a disappointing 7th place finish as I’ll Have Another began his bid for history and immortality with the win. Union Rags was never a serious factor and was trapped in the back of the pack for nearly the entire race as he entered the stretch in 13th position and simply had far too many horses to pass and ground to make up. 2012 Belmont Stakes betting odds had opened with Union Rags as a 9/2 favorite but with I'll Have Another scratched and only Dullahan to deal with, Vegas bookmakers currently have the 3-year-old Colt at 11/5.
Union Rags is trained by Michael Matz and will be mounted by John Velazquez, a Hall of Fame legend on the New York racing circuit. Matz is best known for being the trainer of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. Matz was highly disappointed in the Kentucky Derby results as he believed that Union Rags had a legitimate shot at the Triple Crown in his own right and sees the Belmont Stakes as a great vindication opportunity. While Union Rags will not have the chance to play the villain and attempt to disappoint millions of fans watching on TV and the over 100,000 expected to attend the race at Belmont Park; he could still find redemption with a trip to the winner's circle.
