In a sad twist to the excitement that had been building up for this weekend's Belmont Stakes; trainer Doug O'Neill announced on the Dan Patrick Show today that I'll Have Another is scratched from the 2012 Belmont Stakes in New York on Saturday. There were plenty of passionate horse racing fans that were looking to see the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 but instead will need to make other selections as trainer Doug O'Neil pulled the Colt since suffering a tendon injury. The 144th "run for the carnations" will be telecast on NBC with a starting time of 5:00pm EST with a purse of $1 million USD. It is the marathon leg of the Triple Crown series at a mile and a half in length.
2012 Belmont Stakes odds will now favor Dullahan and Union Rags with the announcement that I'll Have Another is scratched. The 3-year-old Colt developed into quite a story after wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes with the young Mario Gutierrez on board as jockey and the controversial Doug O’Neill as the trainer. I’ll Have Another would have started in the 11th position in a field that will now feature a total of 11-horses and was the morning line 4-5 favorite to make Triple Crown history. I’ll Have Another was coming off a thrilling win at the wire three weeks ago at the Preakness Stakes for his fourth consecutive win and a shot at immortality with a win in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.
Prior to the win in the Preakness Stakes, I’ll Have Another was victorious in the Kentucky Derby, Santa Anita Derby, and the Robert B Lewis. Gutierrez was a virtual unknown prior to this Triple Crown run as the 25 year old has gone from anonymity to the brink of super star status. He was spotted by O’Neill in a race at Santa Anita and quickly hired. O’Neill meanwhile has had to deal with the stigma of being linked to the drugging of horses and with Friday's announcement that I'll Have Another is scratched from 2012 Belmont Stakes odds; one has to wonder especially when you consider that O’Neill is facing a 180 day suspension for the failed drug tests of his horses.
