The $1M Belmont Stakes (G1) will take place at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York on Saturday, June 9th, 2012 will have plenty of drama as Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner "I'll Have Another" attempts to break racing history as the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. The 3-year old Colt owned by J. Paul Reddam and trained by Doug F. O'Neill with jockey Mario Gutierrez in the saddle, have put together a most impressive four race winning streak. After a 6th place finish in the Robert B. Lewis (G2), O'Neill decided to replace rider Julian Leparoux with Gutierrez and the coffe brown Colt responded with wins at the Santa Anita Derby (G1), Kentucky (G1) and Preakness (G1) to be the 5/4 morning line favorite and top contender in 2012 Belmont Stakes betting odds.
I’ll Have Another won the Santa Anita in a time of 1:47.88 of Creative Cause and then continued to dissapoint Bodemeister winning the Kentucky in a time of 2:01.83 around the 1 1/4 miles (2-km) Churchill Downs track and the Preakness in a time of 1:55.94 around the 1 3/6 miles (9-furlongs) Pimlico Race Course. There has been no question in the past two races if I'll Have Another can leave enough in the tank for a final burst down the homestretch, the question of course remains to be seen how the 3-year-old and Gutierrez will apply that speed around the 1 1/2-mile (12-furlongs) dirt track in Elmont. Despite the doubters, Vegas 2012 Belmont Stakes betting odds have listed I'll Have Another as the 5/4 favorite to win the race on June 9th and are also offering +$125 on a $100 wager for the Colt to in Triple Crown lines while a NO is favored at -$155.
Rounding out the top contenders for the 12-horse fieldin the "Test of Champions" race include Derby 7th place finisher Union Rags at 5/1 (+$500), Dullahan at 11/2 who finished 3rd in Kentucky and Paynter at 9/1 whose last graded race was a 4th place finish at the Santa Anita Derby (G1). Street Life has been listed as a 12/1 favorite along with Alpha at 15/1, Atigun at 25/1 and Unstoppable U at 28/1. The remaining four longshots in 2012 Belmont Stakes betting odds have Optimizer as a 30/1 choice with Five Sixteen, Guyana Star Dweej and Ravelo's Boy at 50/1. The final race of the U.S. thoroughbred Triple Crown series can be seen live on NBC sports beginning at 5:00pm EST with the 144th "run for the carnations" having a post time of 6:30pm EST.
