![]() Steve Spurrier is entering his 6th season on the job at South Carolina and “The Old Ball Coach” may have his best team heading into 2010 college football predictions since taking the job with the Gamecocks. But in the Southeastern Conference that may not be enough, especially in the East Division with Florida and Georgia. South Carolina has never had a losing season in college football odds with Spurrier and has bowled in 4 out of his first 5 seasons on the job. South Carolina has opened at online sportsbooks with an over/under regular season win total of 7 OVER (-140), a longshot price of 75-1 in 2011 BCS odds to win the championship and are 18-1 selections to win the SEC conference. The big irony with South Carolina in college football betting odds under the creator of the famed “Fun ‘n Gun” offense during his days in Florida, is that the Gamecocks have never had top shelf quality at quarterback and have had to rely on defense to survive. Junior quarterback Stephen Garcia has been a point of frustration for Spurrier due to his tendency to toss costly interceptions. Last year, Garcia hit on 55 percent of his passes for 2,862 yards with a 17/10 TD/INT ratio. The Gamecocks have not had a 1,000 yard rusher in the past decade but heading into 2010 college football predictions, freshman back Marucs Lattimore is expected to possibly end that draught. Sophomore Alshon Jeffery led the team in receiving last year as a freshman and is another of the 9 returning starters to the offense that has averaged just 20 points per game the past 2 seasons. The defense returns 7 starters to a unit that allowed just 20 points per game in 2009. The Gamecocks 2009 season ended on a bad note when they lost to Connecticut 20-7 in the Papajohns.com bowl with a listless effort. This year they get key SEC home games against Georgia, Alabama, and Arkansas with tough road games at Auburn and Florida. If Spurrier ever makes his goal of a SEC title this would be the year if he can get some breaks along the way. |
