![]() The 2010 Army Black Knights showed significant improvement in head coach Rich Ellerson’s first season on the job as they had a shot at a bowl berth in the season finale against arch rival Navy before losing 3-17 but are playing much more competitive against the Midshipmen than they have in the past. Army finished 5-7 straight up and just 4-7 against the college football betting spread but really grew as the season went on as they adjusted to the new option system installed by Ellerson. The Army Black Knights are listed at online sportsbooks as a +75000 longshot in 2011 BCS college football predictions to win the championship. Their most impressive win in college football odds last year was over Vanderbilt of the Southeastern Conference and was something of a springboard to their march towards a potential bowl berth. The Cadets have 8 starters returning on both sides of the line including sophomore quarterback Trent Steelman, who ran for a team best 855 yards while passing for 637 more in a fine freshman season. Senior running back Patrick Mealy also returns after averaging over 6 yards per carry last year. Nearly all of the top tacklers are back as well including free safety Donovan Travis, who also had 4 interceptions to lead the team last year. With one year of Ellerson’s systems under their belt the Cadets should improve on the 15 points per game on offense and 22 points per game allowed on defense from last year. The highlights of Army’s manageable schedule comes late in the year with a November 20th date at Yankee Stadium against Notre Dame and the season final vs the Navy in which they will try and snap an 8 game losing streak to the Midshipmen. Sportsbooks aren't expecting much out of the Black Knights this college football season as they are +25000 in odds to even reach the championship game. |
