![]() The Philadelphia Phillies are back-to-back champions of the National League and were the 2008 World Series champions. Far from being a team that has reached its peak the Phillies look more dangerous than ever as they have added a top shelf starter to their pitching rotation to compliment a powerful run producing machine that is one of the best in the game. All in all it has made Philadelphia one of the most popular choices in World Series odds at online sportsbooks at 6-1. Right hander Roy Halladay arrives from the Toronto Blue Jays where he was their ace starting pitcher and is slated to do the same for the Phillies. Halladay went 17-10 last year with a 2.79 earned run average. He has shown remarkable consistency through the years with a career record of 148-76 and a tidy 3.43 earned run average. In the past five seasons his worst ERA was 3.71 and three times he stayed under 3.00. The closer spot is an undeniable question mark. Brad Lidge has had the job for the past two years but was alarmingly bad in 2009 as he went 0-8 with a worrisome 7.21 earned run average. Lidge had 31 saves in 42 chances and Philadelphia will need him to return to his former form as a two-time All-Star. Philadelphia ranked 4th in the major leagues for run production last year and should again be a fearsome force to face day in and day out heading into 2010 World Series odds. First baseman Ryan Howard leads the attack and is coming off a 2009 season in which he hit .279 with 37 doubles, 45 home runs and 141 runs batted in. Center fielder Shane Victorino is another key asset. Last year Victorino hit .292 with 102 runs scored, 39 doubles, and 25 stolen bases. Philadelphia is the team to beat in the Senior Circuit this year. |
