2009 Emerald Bowl: BC Eagles vs USC Trojans Odds

The USC Trojans are favorites in the 2009 Emerald Bowl against the Boston College Eagles for Saturday's game on ESPN.

For the first time since 2001 the USC Trojans will not be playing in a BCS bowl game. Normally motivation might be a problem in a situation like that but USC has had so many off the field issues that they might come into the Emerald Bowl against Boston College looking to prove a point. USC lost three of their last five games overall and will be looking to show the country they are still the same USC team that deserves a national ranking. Emerald Bowl odds have the Trojans favored by about a touchdown in this game that can be seen on ESPN on Saturday night at 8:00pm EST.

Boston College comes into the Emerald Bowl at 8-4 as well but the really didn’t do a lot this season in the Big East. Boston College was poor offensively late in the season as they scored 19 points or less in four of their last five games. Freshman quarterback Dave Shinskie had some growing pains as he threw 14 touchdowns but had 13 interceptions. The key for Boston College in Emerald Bowl odds is running the ball as Montel Harris had 1,355 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. The Eagles defense was decent this year allowing just 19.4 points per game this season.

USC was also led by a freshman quarterback. Matt Barkley played well early in the season but struggled down the stretch. He threw for 2,385 yards with 13 TDs but 12 interceptions. The key in Emerald Bowl odds may be the status of running back Joe McKnight who led the team with 1,014 rushing yards this season. His status was up in the air for this game. USC’s defense was not up to its usual standards this season but against the Boston College offense they shouldn’t have too much trouble.

The Eagles are 4-0 ATS in college football odds for their last 4 bowl games as an underdog and they are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games. USC comes into Emerald Bowl odds at 6-1 ATS in their last 7 bowl games and 24-8 ATS in their last 32 non-conference games. The concern for those backing the Trojans in the 2009 Emerald Bowl is that the Trojans are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games as a favorite. Four of the last five Boston College games overall have gone under but the last five Boston College bowl games have gone over. 24 of the last 36 USC games overall have gone under.

Gordon's College Football Picks: The USC Trojans have not been the normal power-house they have been in previously years and that's why they are in the 2009 Emerald Bowl. Although USC is 6-1 against the spread for their last seven bowl games, I think Boston College will play well enough to cover the touchdown spread. My college football pick will be to take the Eagles plus the points in Emerald Bowl odds to the UNDER in a close call parlay at youwager.com. Vegas odds at Caesars sportsbook have the USC Trojans -7.5 favorites against the Boston College Eagles with a total of 44.5.
