![]() There’s a dark cloud over New England this week after the Patriots melted down in their game against the Indianapolis Colts and lost 35-34 as 1.5-point underdogs in week 10 NFL odds. Plus there was an earlier loss in the season to the New York Jets who they now face on Sunday at 4:15pm EST on CBS. If the New England Patriots are truly looking for blood as some sports bettors are saying, then the Brady and Randy Moss combination need to destroy the Jets but will it be that simple? The odds at the major online sportsbooks for Sunday’s big AFC East game between the Patriots and the Jets have New England -10.5 favorites in NFL betting odds with a total of 45. NFL odds manager Paul Edwards, doesn’t think the game will be that easy for the Patriots to cover the spread. Edwards thinks the Jets have a lot more to lose than a revenge match. “At 4-5, the Jets are in danger of dropping out of the playoff race after their last two home games. The Patriots, 6-3, blew a big show with Indianapolis, going from a 17-point fourth-quarter lead to lose 35-34, probably due to an unusually bad call by coach Belichick. The Jets played up their week 2 win over the Patriots in the media and the Pats are probably still pretty mad about the Indy loss. But New York actually has a lot more to play for this week. Their entire season is hanging in the air.” Offense? The New York Jets offensive squad is currently ranked 15th in the league but their chances seem to depend on rookie pivot Mark Sanchez and he has been somewhat inconsistent in NFL betting all season. The Patriots offense is ranked just behind the New Orleans Saints, and they put up 477 and 34 yards against the Colts. Tom Brady had 375 yards and three touchdowns but that late fumble by Laurence Maroney at the goal gave Indianapolis the chance to get back into the game. Still, this looks a lot like the offense that set records back in 2007. Defense? The Jets are third in the league right now, and they rank second in the NFL with nine fumble recoveries. They’re 26th in the NFL in sacks, but they’ll have to put a lot of pressure on Brady to overcome the kind of NFL odds they get these days. While the Patriots’ defense was nearly demolished by the Colts in the fourth quarter, they are still seventh in the NFL in defense and it was rare to see them collapse as they did near the end of that game. It was the first time in 13 games under Belichick that the Patriots led by at least 13 in the fourth quarter and then lost. Injuries? Jets Safety Jim Leonhard (thumb) was injured during the Jacksonville game, and Linebacker Vernon Gholston (hamstring) didn’t play on Saturday. The Patriots look pretty healthy overall with the exception of linebacker Tully Banta-Cain who hurt his ribs against the Colts. The numbers? Three of the last five meetings between these two teams have gone under the posted NFL odds total. The Pats have actually lost their last two against the Jets but they’ve won seven of 10 overall. New England is a perfect 5-0 at home this year in NFL betting and the Jets have dropped five of their last seven at Gillette Stadium. Patriots have won 11 of the last 14 meetings. Patriots are 28-16 against the spread vs. AFC East opponents since 2001. New England is 44-34 against the spread at home under Bill Belichick. Tom Brady is 105-31 as a starter and 81-53 against the spread. Brady is 20-7 against the spread off a loss, and 12-3 against the spread off a loss since 2003. The edge? It may come down to fever versus fervor. As Edwards at youwager.com admits, “With all due respect to the New England offense, this New York defense could be pretty solid when they hit the field. It’s not going to be any Tea Party for the Patriots.” Vegas odds at the Hilton sportsbook have the Patriots -10.5 favorites against the New York Jets with a total of 45 for this match-up on CBS. |
