What does a horse have to do to get respect in 2009 Breeders Cup betting odds? Mine That Bird won the Kentucky Derby yet he is +1600 in Breeders Cup odds for the Classic on Saturday that can be seen on ESPN. The horse will break from the rail with jockey Calvin Borel. If you are not familiar with Borel and the rail you should be. Borel loves the rail, is nicknamed Bo-rail, and has made a career of finding space for horses on the inside. "I love it," jockey Calvin Borel said. Borel gave Mine That Bird a great ride on the rail in the Kentucky Derby to win at 50-1 horse betting odds. Borel is very confident of his chances heading into Saturday’s race. "I have seen him training in the mornings and he looks like he is going just like he was before the Derby, maybe more so than in any race since the Derby," Borel said. Mine That Bird is coming off a disappointing sixth place finish in the Goodwood at Santa Anita on October 10th. "His last race was not that bad. He gets an extra eighth of a mile this time and he needed that last race since it was his first start in two months." Borel said. Trainer Bennie “Chip” Woolley Jr. said that that the poor finish in the Goodwood was due to a flat horse and a slow pace. Wooley expects a much different result on Saturday. “He was a little flat going in [to the Goodwood],” Woolley said. “Since the race, about three or four days afterward, you could start to see him bloom. It wasn’t just me [that noticed]. I was thinking it was just me in my mind.” The key for Mine That Bird in 2009 Breeders Cup betting odds is to have some pace in the race. If it is a slow pace then Mine That Bird has little chance to win. “I hope I see him in the winner’s circle,” Woolley said. “He’s got to run his race. You need some pace in the race. I don’t overanalyze races. You’ve got to send yours out and let him run his race. If that’s enough to win, it wins; if it’s not, it’s not.” Mine That Bird worked out on Monday with jockey Joe Talamo. “It was perfect, exactly what I wanted,” Woolley said. “I told Joe I wanted 1:02 and he goes [1:01 and 2]. You can’t ask for much more than that.” Mine That Bird is +1600 in 2009 Breeders Cup odds which puts the horse as the seventh choice. The unbeaten filly Zenyatta is the +275 favorite followed by Rip Van Winkle at +225. Summer Bird is the third choice at +600 followed by Twice Over +1200, Quality Road +1200, Gio Ponti +1400, Richard's Kid +1500, Mine That Bird +1600, Colonel John +1600, Einstein +1600 and Girolamo +2200. Lanning's Breeders Cup Picks: The Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird is a longshot in 2009 Breeders Cup betting? Apparently the race this year will be wide open so many "should be" favorites will have great odds including Mine That Bird. My Breeders Cup pick is to pair Calvin Borel and Mine That Bird in a few exacta and trifectas with Summer Bird, Zenyatta and Rip Van Winkle. |
