Breeders Cup Odds 2009 - Colonel John

Colonel John winning the 2009 Wickerr Handicap.

It has been a tough year for Colonel John but with just one win he could erase what has been a forgettable 2009. Colonel John may be coming into Saturday’s 2009 Breeders cup odds better than he has been in a long time. He just missed winning the Goodwood Stakes last month, finishing second to longshot Gitano Hernando. Colonel John is 10-1 in Breeders Cup betting odds with jockey Garrett Gomez in the irons. Colonel John missed much of 2009 due to injury. He was the favorite in the Santa Anita Handicap back in March but had to deal with a pulled muscle and a bout with pneumonia.

He didn’t race until July when trainer Eoin Harty sent him in the Wickerr Handicap at Del Mar. He won that race very nicely but then suffered a loss in the Pacific Classic Stakes in September. His second in the Goodwood convinced Harty his horse was ready for the 2009 Breeders Cup. It also helps that the horse had a five-furlong drill in :59.80 on Monday. “I think he’ll run as well as he possibly can,” Harty said. “He’s in top shape and with a clear trip, if he gets beat, it’s only going to be because he got outrun.” Last year Colonel John finished sixth in Breeders Cup odds for the race. That result could happen again considering the talented field in this year’s Classic. "He's proven here, but the best horse in the race is going to win.” Harty said, “I don't think it will come down to the surface. Obviously, Zenyatta is the horse to beat. But we're coming into the race good. He's as fit and as sharp as ever. It's just a matter of getting some racing luck."

2009 Breeders Cup odds for the Classic have Zenyatta as the 14-5 morning line favorite. She is followed closely by European star Rip Van Winkle at 10-3. Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird is the 6-1 third choice. There are two horses at 15-1 including by Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and Twice Over. Also at 12-1 in Breeders Cup betting are Richard's Kid, Gio Ponti, Einstein and Quality Road. The remaining field of Girolamo and Regal Ransom are 18-1 while Awesome Gem is the 30-1 betting longshot in 2009.

Bower's Breeders Cup Predictions: Who doesn't love a horse ridden by Garret Gomez? He is one of the best jockeys in the world but unfortunately he's not on one of the best horses. I'm a bit shocked the Colonel John is favored at 10-1 especially over Mine that Bird but that's what makes horse betting so special. My Breeders Cup pick is to pair Colonel John in a few exacta and trifectas with Summer Bird, Zenyatta and Mine That Bird at Bodog racebook.
