2009 Breeders Cup Classic Odds - Summer Bird

Summer Bird Breezing

This year’s Breeders Cup Classic odds on Saturday is so loaded with talent that the Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird is 6-1 as the third choice in Breeders Cup odds at online racebooks. Superstar filly Zenyatta is the 3-1 horse betting favorite followed by European star Rip Van Winkle at 10-3. "It is what it is," Summer Bird trainer Tim Ice said, "I'm glad we're not the favorite. The horse doesn't know what his odds are, anyway. All I know is that he is definitely sitting on a big race. I bring him out every afternoon and he just touts himself."

Summer Bird not only won the Belmont but also won the Travers and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. The only question for Summer Bird in 2009 Breeders Cup odds is how well he takes to the synthetic track at Santa Anita. "He is coming into this race as good as any race," Ice said. "And I'm saying that because it's true." Summer Bird will be in post position #3 with jockey Kent Desormeaux on board for the 2009 Breeders Cup Classic. That position is just inside Zenyatta who will be starting in post position #4. “I like our draw," Ice said, "We’re inside next to Zenyatta in the gate. I just hope she doesn’t intimidate us, as big as she is.” Bet Summer Bird 6-1 in early 2009 Breeder Cup odds at online racebooks.

Summer Bird has been very tough since losing the Kentucky Derby. He won the Belmont very impressively and the horse has lost only once since the Derby and that was to Rachel Alexandra in the Haskell. 2009 could actually go up on Summer Bird since much of the attention is expected to go to Zenyatta and Rip Van Winkle. European odds makers actually have Rip Van Winkle as the favorite in Breeders Cup betting but the Santa Anita odds makers made Zenyatta the favorite in Breeders Cup Classic odds at online racebooks.

The betting field for the Breeders Cup Classic is 13 deep with a number of longshot contenders including Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird who is at great odds of 15-1. Rounding out the top contenders in 2009 for the field are Richard's Kid 12-1, Gio Ponti 12-1, Einstein 12-1, Quality Road 12-1 and Colonel John 10-1. There are a few horse betting longshots as well that might provide an upset at this year's Breeders Cup with Twice Over 15-1, Girolamo 18-1, Regal Ransom 14-1 and Awesome Gem at 30-1 or more.

Franklin's Breeders Cup Picks: The ponies are back in town and although the 2009 Breeders Cup odds are available, you better get your tickets soon if there are some favorites you have your eye on because the lines will change drastically as we get closer to Friday and Saturday's races. I feel that way about Summer Bird. Zenyatta can get all the glory but my Breeders Cup pick is to pair Summer Bird in a few exacta and trifectas with Rip Van Winkle and Mine That Bird at Bodog racebook.
