2009 St. Louis Rams Super Bowl NFL Odds

It has been five years since the St. Louis Rams finished a season with a winning record in sports odds. It is likely to stretch at least another year if NFL odds are any indication. St. Louis is a 100-1 longshot in NFL betting odds to win Super Bowl XLIV at sportsbooks. The Rams have won a total of five games the last two seasons. They were so bad that head coach Scott Linehan was fired during the 2008 season and Jim Haslett took over as interim coach.

The team hired former New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo in the off-season as their new head coach and he has already made some nice changes that should help the Rams in 2009 in NFL odds. The Rams still have former Pro Bowlers Marc Bulger and Steven Jackson on offense and that helps their NFL betting chances. Keeping both players healthy will be a challenge though. Bulger was hurt in the preseason and the chances of him making it through a full season are remote. Backup Kyle Boller is likely to see playing time sooner or later. The Rams will be relying heavily upon Jackson in NFL odds since Spagnuolo likes to run the ball. There is not much behind Jackson though, so they need him to stay healthy.

The receiving corps is definitely a problem for the Rams. There is no longer a Torry Holt or an Isaac Bruce to throw to. Donnie Avery was hurt in the preseason so the Rams were looking at Keenan Burton and Derek Stanley. They did add Ronald Curry but this group of wide receivers could be the worst in the NFL. The offensive line should be better as the team added center Jason Brown and they took Jason Smith of Baylor with the second pick in the NFL Draft. The line is still weak though so Bulger could be in trouble again in 2009 Super Bowl odds. The defense should be better with Spagnuolo running the show. The defensive front has Adam Carrike and Chris Long to go along with Clifton Ryan and rookie Dorell Scott.

The Rams took Ohio State’s James Laurinaitis in the draft and he is expected to start right away. Will Witherspoon and Quinton Culberson should get playing time. The secondary has potential with cornerback Ron Bartell and free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe. Picking up James Butler also looks like a good move. The Rams have a very good kicker in Josh Brown and a great punter in Donnie Jones. The Rams are 10-1 longshots in NFL odds to win the NFC West this season. While they probably won’t win the division they should definitely be improved this season in NFL betting with Spagnuolo in charge.
