![]() The 2009 New York Jets are going to be a lot different than the 2008 version. New head coach Rex Ryan is transforming the Jets into a tough, confident team. They are not however an experienced team at quarterback and that could prevent them from making the playoffs this season in sports betting odds. New York is considered a longshot to win the Super Bowl as they are 40-1 in NFL odds at online sportsbooks. The Jets will go into NFL odds for the 2009 season with a new starting quarterback. It will either be Kellen Clemens or rookie Mark Sanchez who will get the job but even if Clemens wins the job to start the season, he won’t have it for long. The Jets took Sanchez with their first pick in the NFL Draft and they are expecting him to be their franchise quarterback for many years to come. New York is 8-1 to win the AFC East this season in NFL odds, well behind the New England Patriots who are -450. The Jets are not without a chance though, especially if Sanchez wins the starting job at quarterback. New York was 9-7 last season and they looked to be improved. Rex Ryan is a defensive guru and will definitely have New York playing better on that side of the ball. The Jets will have a new starting quarterback but they will still be a running team. Thomas Jones led the AFC in rushing last season while Leon Washington provided the speed. Rookie Shonn Greene could make a huge impact this season as well. Part of the reason the Jets are so good at running the ball is fullback Tony Richardson who is a blocking machine. The Jets do have some questions at receiver. They lost Laveranues Coles in the off-season so they are relying upon Jerricho Cotchery to be a #1 receiver. The Jets are looking at David Clowney or Brad Smith to emerge as the #2 receiver. Chansi Stuckey looks to be the slot receiver. New York is not in much better shape at tight end as Dustin Keller is the starter. The offensive line for New York is very talented and experienced with Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore and D’Brickashaw Ferguson. The defensive line has Shaun Ellis, Kris Jenkins and Marques Douglas. The linebackers are led by Bart Scott who Ryan brought with him from Baltimore. He complements David Harris, Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas with last year’s first round pick Vernon Gholston getting time. The secondary is going to be a lot better. The Jets got Lito Sheppard from Philadelphia and Jim Leonhard from Baltimore. They also got Donald Strickland from San Francisco and they still have Pro Bowl corner Darrelle Revis and strong safety Kerry Rhodes. The Jets have a solid kicker in Jay Feely. If Sanchez wins the starting quarterback job and plays up to his potential the Jets could surprise some sportsbooks in NFL odds and make the playoffs in 2009. |
