![]() The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are not going to go under the radar in 2009 college football odds as they did a year ago. Head coach Paul Johnson has quickly established Georgia Tech as a Top 25 team. Georgia Tech is +600 to win the ACC Conference and are 50-1 in BCS odds to win the national championship at most sportsbooks. Georgia Tech has an exciting spread offense that is option based and very difficult to defend. They return 16 starters from last year’s squad including tailback Jonathan Dwyer who was the ACC Player of the Year last season. Georgia Tech ranked fourth in the country in rushing yardage and first in the ACC a year ago in sports odds. Josh Nesbitt leads the Georgia Tech offense and he runs the triple option offense very effectively. He may actually be asked to throw the ball a little more this season. When he does hand off though, he has some great options. Dwyer led the ACC in rushing and went over 100 yards in nine games. Roddy Jones averaged over 8 yards per carry when he got a chance. Lucas Cox is also going to get some action and Anthony Allen transferred from Louisville and could also be part of the picture. Georgia Tech’s receivers normally do a lot of blocking but Demaryius Thomas is a good one and has NFL potential. The other spot should go to either Tyler Melton or freshman Stephen Hill. The entire offensive line returns for Tech and that is great news. Tackles Austin Barrick and Nick Claytor are back along with guards Joseph Gilbert and Cord Howard and center Dan Voss. The defense has to replace defensive tackles Darryl Richard and Vance Walker and Michael Johnson at end. The returning starter is Derrick Morgan. Robert Hall should be the other starter at end while the starters at tackle should come from Ben Anderson, Jason Peters, Logan Walls, T.J. Barnes and J.C. Lanier. Four linebackers who had playing time last year return this season. They are Anthony Barnes, Sedric Griffin, Kyle Jackson and Brad Jefferson. The secondary is strong led by Morgan Burnett and Dominique Reese. Burnett had seven interceptions which tied for most in the nation. Cornerback Mario Butler also returns. The other spot will look to go to either Rashaad Reid or Jerrard Tarrant. Cooper Taylor should also get time in the defensive secondary. Georgia Tech returns kicker Scott Blair but that might not be good news considering he missed almost as many as he made last season. The Yellow Jackets are capable of winning any game on their schedule and the sportsbooks know this setting their regular season win total at 8.5 in college football odds. Their three toughest games against Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Georgia are at home. Tough road games are on the slate though at Florida State and Miami. |
