![]() The Alabama Crimson Tide heads into the 2009 season with extremely high expectations. The Tide went 12-2 last season so improving upon that record in sports odds will be difficult but that is what is expected. College football odds have the Tide at 17-1 to win the national title. Their chances will rise or fall based on their season opening game against Virginia Tech in Atlanta. The Crimson Tide has a new starting quarterback in junior Greg McElroy but that doesn’t seem to be a concern. Head coach Nick Saban said that McElroy is the clear starter and that the offense could be even better even though John Parker Wilson is gone. The Tide will miss Glen Coffee who went to the NFL early but they have Mark Ingram who had 728 yards with 12 touchdowns as a freshman in the SEC Conference and Roy Upchurch. They also have Trent Richardson who could see time. The real strength of the offense in college football odds is at wide receiver where superstar Julio Jones resides. He was great as a freshman last season with 58 catches for 924 yards and four touchdowns and should be even more dangerous this season. Looking to compete for the other wide receiver spot are Mike McCoy, Earl Alexander, Marquis Maze, Kenny Bell, Kendall Kelly and Kevin Norwood. The Tide also has Colin Peek at tight end. The offensive line lost Andre Smith but they do have Junior college transfer James Carpenter and D.J. Fluker. William Vlachos should be the starting center while Left guard Mike Johnson and right tackle Drew Davis are solid. The defense at Alabama is loaded. The defensive line has Terrence Cody who made 24 tackles last season. He is joined by Lorenzo Washington and Brandon Deaderick. The linebackers are led by Rolando McClain who led the team with 95 tackles last season. In the middle is Dont’a Hightower who had 64 tackles a year ago. Brandon Fanney has another one of the starting spots along with Cory Reamer. The secondary will miss Rashad Johnson but safety Justin Woodall is back. Robby Green, Mark Barron and Ali Sharrief will try for the other safety spot. The cornerbacks are good with Javier Arenas and Kareem Jackson. Marquis Johnson, Alonzo Lawrence and Dre Kirkpatrick should get playing time in the nickel. The kicking game is nothing special with senior Leigh Tiffin missing nine field goals last year. Punter P.J. Fitzgerald was solid though. The schedule makes Alabama a national title contender in college football odds. The opener against Virginia Tech is the toughest game. The only road test in college football odds is at Mississippi while the only tough home game looks to be LSU. An unbeaten regular season is not out of the question for the Tide if they can get past the Hokies. |
