![]() The Penn State Nittany Lions are 35-1 to win the 2009 BCS national championship and those college football odds are very appealing considering Penn State has an easy schedule. Penn State has only one really tough gamein sports odds (Ohio State) and they get that at home. What hurts the Nittany Lions in college football odds is that they did lose some key players from last year’s team. Leading the way for Penn State is quarterback Darryl Clark who is +2000 in Heisman trophy odds. He threw for 2,592 passing yards and 19 touchdowns while running for 282 yards and 10 TDs last season. Clark is supported in the backfield by running back Evan Royster who had 1,236 yards last season. Penn State will need both of these two to play well because they have question marks everywhere else. The four returning receivers, Brett Brackett, Derek Moye, Chaz Powell and Graham Zug combined for only 29 catches last year. The offensive line loses three first-team All Big Ten conference players but linemen at Penn State seem to grow on trees. Stefen Wisniewski will be one of the new starters while Nerraw McCormack and DeOn’tae Pannell should also get time. The defense has some holes including on the defensive line. Jerome Hayes and Jack Crawford are the likely starters at the ends while Jared Odrick, Ollie Ogbu and Abe Koroma are the candidates for the tackle positions. The linebackers are led by senior Sean Lee who is just another of the great linebackers to come out of Penn State. He was the second leading tackler in the Big 10 in 2007 but had to redshirt last season due to ACL surgery. Navorro Bowman is back and he led the team in tackles last season. Michael Mauti and Bani Gbadyu should also get playing time. The secondary for the Nittany Lions is a problem. Last year with experienced starters they didn’t do well in the Rose Bowl and this year it looks worse. Cornerback A.J. Wallace is the only returning cornerback. D’Anton Lynn or Knowledge Timmons look to take the other spot. The starting free safety should be Drew Astorino while Andrew Dailey or Nick Sukay gets the other spot. Gerald Hodges could be in the mix as well. The Nittany Lions will have a kicking battle as Collin Wagner battles Anthony Fera. Jeremy Boone returns as the punter. Penn State is going to be favored in college football odds in perhaps every game this season. Their toughest games are all at home as they host Iowa and Ohio State. The last game on the road at Michigan State could be their one road test. |
