![]() Virginia Tech is considered one of the darkhorses to win the 2009 national title in college football betting odds as they are listed at 15-1. Their chances in sports odds are going to rise or fall very early in 2009 though as they face Alabama in their season opener in Atlanta. A win against the Crimson Tide could propel the Hokies into the BCS odds picture while a loss would take them out of it. Frank Beamer’s Virginia Tech squad returns 15 starters from last year’s team that won the ACC Conference and the Orange Bowl against Cincinnati. The Hokies ranked 7th in the country on defense last season but their offense was weak. Tyrod Taylor is now the official starter at quarterback after splitting time with Sean Glennon the past couple of years. He can run with the best quarterbacks in the country but so far he has not proven he can throw. In spring drills he was much better throwing the ball but how well he does in the regular season remains to be seen. The running game looks solid for the Hokies with Darren Evans, Josh Oglesby and Kenny Lewis. Ryan Williams is another running back who could see a lot of time this season. The receivers for Virginia Tech simply were not very good in 2008. Danny Coale, Jarrett Boykin and Dyrell Roberts have more experience and should be improved while tight end Greg Boone may be the best receiving option. The offensive line lost two starters from last season but the line should still be better in 2009. The Virginia Tech defense is always good and this season should be no different. Jason Worilds is back at end and he had eight sacks last season to lead the Hokies. The rest of the line looks unsettled but John Graves will definitely be one of the starters. Demetrius Taylor and Cordarrow Thompson will see playing time as well. The linebackers are young but talented. Barquell Rivers looks to have one of the spots while Jake Johnson and Quillie Odom will compete for another spot. Cam Martin and Cody Grimm also return. The secondary for Tech is very good led by Stephan Virgil and Victor Harris. Rashad Carmichael, Cris Hill and Kam Chancellor should see playing time. The Hokies will need a new kicker this season. Matt Waldron and freshman Cody Journell are battling for the starting job. Special teams are always the strength of Beamer’s teams and this year’s Hokies will be strong again in college football odds. |
