![]() The 2009 USC Trojans are 6-1 in BCS odds to win the national title. USC has been a model of success in recent seasons, winning at least 11 games each of the last seven years in sports odds. That streak of great success could be in danger in 2009 as the Trojans lose eight starters from a fantastic defense, have to break in a new quarterback and new offensive and defensive coordinators. USC has two advantages though. They have a huge talent base of players to draw from and they play in the weak Pac 10. And that means they are almost always a national title contender. The Trojans do return their entire offensive line so that is a great place to start as we look at the team heading into 2009 BCS odds. The line will need to be good since the team will have a new quarterback this season. The starting job is expected to go to either sophomore Aaron Corp or true freshman Matt Barkley. The experience edge goes to Corp but Barkley is the future star at USC and he could play this season. The Trojans always have good running backs and 2009 will be no exception. They have Stafon Johnson, who ran for 705 yards and nine TDs a year ago, and C.J. Gable, who had 617 yards and eight touchdowns. Joe McKnight and Allen Bradford are also in the mix. Even redshirt freshman Curtis McNeal could seem some time. The Trojans have excellent receivers in juniors Damian Williams and Ronald Johnson. Williams had 58 catches for 869 yards and nine TDs last year while Johnson averaged 17.3 yards per catch. The defensive line loses three of four starters. Sophomore Jurrell Casey looks to be a starter this season along with junior Everson Griffen and Armond Armstead. The linebackers should be led by sophomore Chris Galippo. The outside starters should be juniors Malcolm Smith and Michael Morgan. The secondary looks good with Taylor Mays at free safety and Josh Pinkard at the other spot. Will Harris should get some playing time as well. The starting corners should be Kevin Thomas and Shareece Wright. Overall the defense is going to be weaker than in 2008. The Trojans need a new kicker and punter so that is also a concern heading into 2009. USC may be listed at 6-1 in college football betting BCS odds but unless Barkley is given the quarterback job it seems unlikely USC has enough talent to go unbeaten. Since they play in the Pac 10 an unbeaten season would probably be a necessity for the Trojans to get national title consideration. The three tough games for USC are at Ohio State, at Notre Dame and at California. |
