![]() The Texas Longhorns were some poor clock management away from a perfect season a year ago in sports odds as they left too much time on the clock and Graham Harrell threw a last second TD pass to Michael Crabtree to spoil the Longhorn’s season. It shouldn’t come down to that in college football betting odds this season as Texas is loaded, returning 14 starters, led by quarterback Colt McCoy who is +275 in Heisman trophy odds. Texas is 8-1 in BCS odds to win the national title in 2009 and the only tough test looks to be the game against the Oklahoma Sooners on October 17th. McCoy is poised to have a huge season. He set an NCAA Division I single-season record by completing 76.7 percent of his passes last season. He was also the team’s leading rusher in 2008. That should not happen again as Texas has a lot of talent in the backfield. They have Vondrell McGee, Cody Johnson and Foswhitt Whittaker returning but youngsters Jeremy Hills and redshirt freshman Tre’ Newton, the son of former Cowboys offensive lineman Nate Newton will get some playing time as will true freshman Chris Whaley. The Longhorns will miss receiver Quan Cosby but they have Malcolm Williams who could be even better this season. Offensive coordinator Greg Davis is expecting a huge year from Williams. The Longhorns also have veteran Jordan Shipley returning and Brandon Collins and James Kirkendoll will also be in the mix. Texas returns four starters to the offensive line so all is good upfront. The defense did suffer some losses. They will have to replace Brian Orakpo at defensive end and tackle Roy Miller. Defensive coordinator Will Muschamp always finds new players and he is looking at Sergio Kindle to have a big year and true freshman end Alex Okafor is expected to play this season. The linebackers feature Roddrick Muckelroy who led the team in tackles last season but the star of the group could be Emmanuel Acho. The secondary for Texas is deep and talented. Earl Thomas and Blake Gideon are back and Aaron Williams and Chykie Brown look like future NFL players. Texas returns both its kickers and its punter. The college football schedule for Texas is really pretty easy. If they get past Oklahoma they could easily run the table. The only other test looks to be at Oklahoma State but the Cowboys don’t have nearly as much talent as Texas. The Longhorns have a real chance to win the national title in 2010 BCS odds. |
