Belmont Stakes Betting - Mine That Bird Favored In Belmont Odds

Mine That Bird is the 2009 Belmont Favorite

The morning line favorite in the 141st running of Belmont Stakes betting on Saturday is Mine That Bird. The horse won the Kentucky Derby at odds of 50-1 and was a closing second behind Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness. In a span of two races Mine That Bird has gone from a 50-1 afterthought to the favorite in Belmont Stakes odds. Mine That Bird is definitely the people’s choice but he is not the wiseguy’s choice. That honor belongs to Charitable Man who is getting a lot of respect at Belmont Park.

Mine That Bird will have to run down Charitable Man on Saturday since there is little doubt that Charitable Man will be on the lead. The question becomes can he do it. Mine That Bird is no longer a horse that is going under the radar and that is just one factor that could be against the horse in Belmont Stakes odds. Trainer Chip Woolley was virtual unknown in horse racing circles before the Derby. It is not that way anymore. "This is a lot different than when we arrived at Churchill Downs," Woolley said. "Nobody even came to see me for the first week." Woolley didn’t think he would be in this position either. He didn’t even believe his horse could compete in the Derby, let alone win. Mine That Bird was so disrespected that Tom Durkin didn’t even see the horse winning the Kentucky Derby.

"The only person more surprised than me winning the Derby seemed to be you," Woolley said to Durkin. After the Derby win many people were still not convinced as Rachel Alexandra was made the favorite in the Preakness. Mine That Bird was the third choice in the betting but he performed very well, finishing second. Now the horse is getting a lot of attention in Belmont Stakes odds. A field of 10 will be going to the post on Saturday in Belmont Stakes betting. Mine That Bird and jockey Calvin Borel will be the headliners. Borel is trying to make history becoming the first jockey to ever win all three races aboard different horses. The one concern for horse betting players that are backing Mine That Bird and Borel is that the jockey is 0 for 7 in his seven career races at Belmont Park. Keep in mind that six of the last seven Belmont Stakes have been won by locally based jockeys.
