![]() As Calvin Borel makes headlines during the 2009 Belmont Stakes going for the jockey Triple Crown, another famous name will be quietly entering his betting longshot hoping to make some noise. D. Wayne Lukas is probably one of the most recognizable names to thoroughbred horse betting fans and this weekend, Lukas will offer his fans Luv Gov as a 20-1 betting longshot in 2009 Belmont Stakes odds. Any time Lukas enters a horse it is worth taking notice. Although Luv Gov is a 20-1 betting longshot, having Lukas as his trainer tilts the odds just a bit. Lukas has won in Belmont Stakes odds before with betting longshots Tabasco Cat in 1994, Thunder Gulch in 1995 and Editor’s Note in 1996. "We've won this race before with horses no one gave a shot to," Lukas said. "We knew they were developing horses coming into the race at the right time and the right way." The three-year old mare is the son of 2003 Travers winner Ten Most Wanted and was originally named Town Prowler by his owners Maylou Whitney and John Hendrickson but was changed to “Luv Gov” after reading a memorable headline in a 2008 New York Post article about then-Governor Eliot Spitzer. "The last thing we want to do is offend (Spitzer)," Hendrickson said. "We're actually supporters of his. We gave him a lot of money, and he's always been good to us. It's just done out of fun." Luv Gov is 1-11 in his racing career breaking his maiden at the Kentucky Derby and then finishing 8th in the Preakness Stakes. The three-year-old has lifetime horse betting earnings of $62,896. |
