![]() The public and the media may be slobbering over Mine That Bird in Belmont Stakes betting with his chances of winning the 141st running of the Belmont on Saturday but the wise guys are all over Charitable Man. Mine That Bird is the 2-1 morning line favorite but Charitable Man is right there in odds at 3-1. There is a lot to like about Charitable Man beginning with his jockey Alan Garcia. He has won four graded stakes races in the past four weeks and is a rising superstar. Garcia is also looking for a Belmont double as he won aboard longshot Da’ Tara last year in Belmont Stakes betting. "He's riding very well," said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, "Both he and (Borel) are in a bit of a zone, but maybe Calvin's zone is a little bigger because he won the first two legs of the Triple Crown. But Alan has been great in big races the last few weeks." Calvin Borel is trying to become the first jockey to win all three Triple Crown races aboard different horses but Garcia is looking for history as well. No jockey has won back-to-back Belmonts since Laffit Pincay Jr. won three straight from 1982-1984. "I think it's important for his confidence level that he did win the race last year," McLaughlin said. "He's riding so well right now. He's just doing everything right." Garcia may have a good chance to win in Belmont Stakes odds if you listen to other trainers. D. Wayne Lukas, who has won this race four times, loves Charitable Man in the Belmont. "Charitable Man is the perfect Belmont horse," Lukas said. "He has a beautiful, high cruising speed. He is a horse of great quality. He is bred to win, and Kiaran (McLaughlin, his trainer) knows how to get one ready to run." Charitable Man also had the pedigree that works well for Belmont Stakes betting. He is the son of Lemon Drop Kid who won the 1999 Belmont Stakes. His trainer loves his horse’s chances in Belmont Stakes odds. "I'm 1-for-1 in the Belmont, and hopefully after Saturday I'll be 2-for-2. Our horse could not be doing any better. McLaughlin said, “We're very excited, But you have to respect Mine That Bird because with a bit of luck, he could be going for the Triple Crown." |
