One of the best ways for many online poker players to get into some of the major tournaments like the World Series of Poker* and others around the world is to play in an online poker satellite tournament. What exactly is an online poker satellite tournament and can you win a WSOP* seat? Online poker satellite tournaments are actually tournaments that get you into a larger tournament. The buy-in is much smaller in the satellite than the big tournament and that is the main reason online poker players will give them a shot. A WSOP* seat in the main event has a buy-in of $10,000, why pay $10K when you can win your seat for dollars? If Chris Moneymaker can turn a $39 poker satellite into $2.5 million and a championship bracelet, you can too. You need to know a few things if you do play in one. The first and most important consideration is time. Do you have the necessary time to play? Many of these satellite tournaments especially for the World Series of Poker* take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours to complete. That is a long time to be playing poker without a break so you need to be prepared. You also need to know your chances of winning and you need to have an aggressive playing strategy. Many of the online poker satellite tournaments offer excellent value and give the average player a chance to get into the big tournament. Keep in mind though that the chances are small. Even if you are a good player, your chances of getting into the bigger event are still pretty long. The average player has a very small chance of winning the tournament, but a small chance is better than no chance at all. If you decide to play in one of these online poker satellites for a WSOP* seat you have to change your strategy. To have any chance at winning one of these events you have to be aggressive. You are going to have to take chances to win. The problem with this type of strategy is that you may not be around very long if it doesn’t work. Aggression means you will be all-in more than you might like and it will cause you to sometimes exit quickly. If you want to win though, you have to be willing to mix it up. Remember that the bigger your stack, the more power you have over the table. When it gets closer to the money, or to the big prize, you might take fewer risks. You will want the shorter stacks to do themselves in. Hopefully these points will be of help to you if you are entering an online poker satellite tournament for a seat to the World Series of Poker*.
