Preakness Stakes betting longshots have been few and far between in recent years. If you are looking to hit the big score in Preakness betting you should be aware that Preakness favorites have won more than half the time in the history of the race. Let’s look at the chances of a longshot winning in 2009 odds. Preakness betting longshots can win but not very often. Just how often have Preakness favorites come through for online betting gamblers? More than half the time the Preakness betting favorites have won. Yes, you heard that right. Over 50% of the time the Preakness favorites have won. If you want to take a chance with betting a Preakness longshots you do so at your own risk. And the numbers are even more pronounced recently. Since 1977 only two horses have won at odds of more than 10-1 in Preakness betting odds. That is an amazing statistic and it is really more than that since in 2006 the favorite would have won if not for getting hurt. That was the year that Barbaro was injured and Bernadini picked up the pieces and won at odds of 13-1. Not many people thought that Barbaro was beatable and if not for an injury he probably wasn’t. The Preakness is simply a race for favorites. Preakness betting longshots just are not good value bets. The biggest of the Preakness longshots was Master Derby in 1975. That horse went off at just over 23-1. Just look at the past 10 years if you need to be convinced that favorites are not the way to go in Preakness Stakes betting. Even when the favorite didn’t win in 2007, Curlin was the winner and he was almost the favorite in the wagering, just behind Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense. What you must remember about Preakness betting odds is that the field is much smaller than the Derby so big longshots are not as common. Oftentimes the field is 8-12 horses compared to the 20 horses that run in the Derby. The Preakness is also more predictable with speed holding up well from certain post positions. Rarely does a horse come from the clouds and win at boxcar numbers in Preakness Stakes betting. That means Preakness longshots are just not good wagers in online sports betting. You might be able to put some of the longshots into exotic wagers but betting them to win has not been successful. |
