The NASCAR season may have started last week with the Daytona 500 but the real racing starts in California on Sunday with Fontana Auto Club 500 odds. Everyone says the Daytona 500 is the most important race of the year but it is restrictor plate racing and the best cars don’t always win. That should change this week as NASCAR odds move to California for the Fontana Auto Club 500. One of the favorites in 2009 Sprint Cup odds this week will be Kyle Busch who finished 41st last week at Daytona after having a dominant car. Busch was involved in a wreck not of his own making that probably cost him the win. “Daytona was certainly disappointing and frustrating,” Busch said. “But the season is so long that you can’t let one race bug you once you are on to the next race. Last week was last week, and this week is this week.” Busch is one of the favorites in 2009 Sprint Cup odds for the race this week along with defending champion Carl Edwards and last year’s NASCAR series champ, Jimmie Johnson. All three are listed at about 4-1 in 2009 Sprint Cup odds. Busch has been very strong in his career at the Auto Club Speedway in California with one win and seven straight Top 10 finishes. “Just like putting last year behind us, we’ve already put Daytona behind us, and we’re focused on what we can do to run well at California and be in a position to win this week.” Busch said, “You can’t change last week. It is what it is.” Kyle Busch is a -130 favorite in his NASCAR qualifying betting matchup over Greg Biffle. Last season Carl Edwards was able to hold off Jimmie Johnson to win at Fontana. Edwards started 9th last year but he was able to outdueled Johnson and Gordon down the stretch to win. His teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. is listed at 13-1 but the numbers don’t favor Jr. on Sunday considering he has only two Top 10 finishes in his eight career starts at Auto Club Speedway. Matt Kenseth won in 2006 and in 2007 and he is listed at 7-1 in 2009 Sprint Cup odds. Greg Biffle was the winner in 2005, Jeff Gordon won in 2004 and Kurt Busch took the race in 2003. Jimmie Johnson won in 2002 while Rusty Wallace won in 2001 and Jeremy Mayfield in 2000. You may want to be aware that the pole sitter has never won in Auto Club 500 odds for the race’s history. The farthest back any driver has won from is the 31st starting position.
