Horse of the Year Curlin is expected to make his next start in the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Sept. 27th. A win in that race would make Curlin the all-time leading money earner in horse racing betting history. He is just over $200,000 behind Cigar who earned just under $10 million in his career.

"The Jockey Club Gold Cup was selected for Curlin in order to continue his legacy as one of America's greatest Thoroughbreds," owner Jess Jackson said, "We are steering Curlin towards all the renowned competitions and certainly the Jockey Club Gold Cup is one of America's most prestigious races."

In the past, many of America's top Thoroughbreds sealed their honors by competing in this race. It will be Curlin’s third straight race in New York as he finished second on the turf in the Man o’ War in July and last weekend he won the Woodward Stakes.

"Also, this contest is in New York State, where Curlin has seen much success and received an outpouring of support. Both factors weighed heavily in favor of our decision to compete again at Belmont." Jackson added.

Curlin has raced twice in the past at Belmont Park, finishing second to Rags to Riches in the Belmont Stakes and winning against Lawyer Ron in the Jockey Club Gold Cup last year.

Curlin will attempt to become the ninth horse to win back-to-back Jockey Club Gold Cups.

In other news, Big Brown will be running in the Monmouth Stakes next Saturday but the field is yet to be determined. The prize pool goes up from $200,000 to a half million if Big Brown is entered so owners are looking at the possibility of challenging Big Brown in the race.

Philadelphia Park has the PTHA President's Cup the same day, at the same distance, for a quarter of a million dollar purse.

Of the 35 runners nominated for the Monmouth Stakes, 17 are also nominated for the PTHA President's Cup. Some trainers believe that Big Brown is beatable but trainer Dennis Manning who has nominated Victory Alleged and Oneballnostrikes to both races believes that Big Brown will be tough.

"There will be plenty of speed in there as long as Big Brown is in there," he said. "I'm just on the outside looking in, but I think Big Brown is going to show he's an exceptionally good horse on the turf."
