Jets and DolphinsThe Brett Favre era in New York officially gets underway on Sunday, September 7th as the New York Jets open up their NFL betting season in Miami to face the Dolphins.

While Favre is getting all of the press, former Jets’ quarterback Chad Pennington may end up getting the last laugh as he is now the man in Miami. What looked like a dull game on the NFL schedule for Week 1 now has a lot of interesting sidelights.

The Jets with Favre suddenly look like serious NFL betting contenders in the AFC. New York had already made some nice addition including Alan Faneca who should protect Favre upfront.

Wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery could be poised for a big year with Favre throwing to him and Thomas Jones should have some nice holes to run through with defenses focused on Favre.

Rookie tight end Dustin Keller could turn into one of the best tight ends in football with Favre looking for him all the time. Holdover Bubba Franks also provides Favre with security. The Jets were projected as a below .500 team in NFL betting before the Favre trade but many publications are now predicting the Jets will challenge for a playoff spot.

The Jets have owned this series against Miami of late. They are 8-0-1 versus the NFL betting odds in the last nine meetings. The Dolphins were a mess last season going 5-9-2 against the NFL odds while winning only one game straight up.

That will change this season with Bill Parcells running the organization and new head coach Tony Sparano. The Dolphins now have a quarterback in Pennington and they look to have a running game with a renewed Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown.

The Jets have lost eight of their last nine road games straight up but they have covered nine of their last ten games in Miami according to NFL betting stats. Six of their last seven games overall have gone under the total. The Dolphins have gone over the NFL betting total in four of their last five games overall and six of their last eight home games.
