Myers is 4-9 on the season with a 5.46 ERA. Myers pitched well in his last outing against Washington allowing only one unearned run in seven innings. He is 3-2 with a 5.43 ERA in his career against St. Louis. Wellemeyer is 8-4 on the season with a 4.13 ERA. He is starting to go longer since his return from elbow injury although the Cardinals have not let him reach 100 pitches yet. The Cardinals did not make any trades before the deadline even though they were looking for bullpen help. General manager John Mozeliak was not able to get anything done because teams were asking too much in return. The Cardinals are counting on Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright to improve their pitching staff and the early returns on Carpenter were good. SBGGlobal sportsbook has MLB odds for Sunday's game between the Phillies and the Cardinal at a pick em -110. "I really think our 'something' looks like Carpenter, Wainwright, and currently we're looking at [rookie Jaime Garcia] in a reliever role," Mozeliak said. "When we started looking at what was out there, we saw marginal, incremental benefit from some of these left-handers that were being touted." The last time the Phillies were in St. Louis they lost two of three which started a downfall that saw them drop out of first place. "I was thinking about that, actually," Jimmy Rollins said. "That's where it starts to go bad, so maybe things will start to go good." Recently things have gone very well for the Phillies. Before this series began they were hitting .331 over the past five games and Rollins has been hot, hitting.364 average with two home runs. "Stay focused," Rollins said. "That's number one. Early in the season, it gets lost every once in a while because there are so many games to go and it's like the race is getting longer. Now we're on the short end of it, so it's easier to see what's ahead. Getting knocked out of first place just means that you probably weren't playing good. Look what we had to do to be in that position. We played a lot of losing baseball. We weren't doing it. We knew we had a lot of time, and now we know the time is short. The race is now a sprint now." |
